Brenner Base Tunnel (Construction Lot H41 and H53)

The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) is one of the largest civil infrastructure projects currently ongoing world-wide. As part of the Trans-European Networks (TEN), it runs for 64 km between Tulfes (Austria) and Fortezza (Italy) and will be the longest underground railway connection globally once completed.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the planning, installation, documentation and monitoring of tunnel lining segments using distributed fiber optic sensors at construction lots H41 and H53.

Gschnitztal Bridge (A13 Brenner motorway)

The Gschnitztal Bridge, a highway bridge constructed in the 1960s along the A13 between Innsbruck and the Brenner pass, has been exposed to significant traffic load increases over the past decades. A sensing network has therefore been adopted by the Austrian highway operator ASFINAG to monitor arising deformations and, finally, effects on the structural integrity.

ACI Monitoring was commissioned with the planning and installation of an enhanced monitoring system including distributed fiber optic and inclination sensors with more than 7.600 sensing points in total.

Stuttgart 21 (Main Railway Station)

Stuttgart 21 is a major railway infrastructure project in Germany, primarily focused on transforming the existing Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) into an underground through station. The project is expected to improve rail connectivity and capacity within the framework of the Trans-European Networks (TEN).

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the continuous monitoring of 30 DFOS lines inside the main railway station above the local train lines to detect local deficiencies like cracks at an early stage. Our founding team members were also responsible for the design, installation and documentation of the fiber optic sensing network.

DC Tower 2

DC Tower 2 is a prominent skyscraper project currently under construction in the Donau City complex in Vienna, Austria. Standing at a height of approximately 180 meters, it will offer commercial and office spaces with a usable area of 62,000 sqm in striking modern design and architectural significance as part of Vienna’s skyline.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the monitoring of six fiber optic extensometers with length of up to 45 m installed along the diaphragm walls of the tower’s foundation.

Embankment Monitoring (High Speed 2)

The High-Speed 2 (HS2) is a major railway infrastructure project in the United Kingdom, aiming to create a high-speed rail network connecting London with the North of England. It is expected to significantly reduce travel times and increase capacity on the rail network, with a projected cost of around £98 billion.

ACI Monitoring was commissioned with the planning, installation, documentation, and continuous monitoring of six measurement lines (each 40 m long) underneath embankments using distributed fiber optic sensors. The fiber optic cables were installed on two layers to calculate curvatures and finally, to analyze distributed displacement profiles.

Laxenburger Bridge (A23 motorway Südosttangente)

The Laxenburger Bridge was built in 1969 and crosses the A23, one of the busiest highway roads in Austria as well as the railway tracks of the Pottendorf line and the Donauländebahn.The 320 m long and 20 m wide local road bridge therfore strives for high reliability without restrictions for road and train traffic.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the planning, installation, documentation, and monitoring of a distributed fiber optic sensing system in two crucial sections over the highway and the railway tracks to provide essential information about local deficincies and the overall integrity of the structure.

Aurach Bridge (A1 West motorway)

With a height of 50 meters, the Aurach Bridge is the highest bridge on the A1 Westautobahn in Austria. The bridge is being rebuilt by the highway operator ASFiNAG with a total length of 600 m and will cost approximately 65 million euros.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the planning, installation, and documentation of a distributed fiber optic monitoring system, including more than 450 m of sensing cable embedded inside the concrete of the highway’s floor and roadway slab. The sensing results will provide valuable insights into the structural behavior of the bridge and finally, a basis of data to verify the numerical models.

Semmering Base Tunnel (Construction Lot 1.1, 2.1 and 3.1)

The Semmering Base Tunnel (SBT), a major railway tunnel project in Europe, is designed to be approximately 27.3 kilometers long, making it one of the longest railway tunnels in the world once completed. The tunnel aims to improve transportation efficiency and connectivity by providing a faster and more direct route for trains through the Semmering Mountain range in Austria.

ACI Monitoring was commissioned with the planning, installation, documentation, and long-term monitoring of 25 monitoring cross-sections using distributed fiber optic sensing in the inner tunnel lining of the SBT. The measurement sections will be integrated into the tunnel’s fiber optic communication network, so that measurements can be carried out directly from the tunnel portal during operation without interfering with train traffic.

Cable Way Station (Grossarltal-Dorfgastein Ski Area)

The Großarler Bergbahnen GmbH & Co KG finished building the new Großarl-Dorfgastein ski swing (10EUB Kieserl) in autumn 2023. The intermediate as well as the summit cable way station were constructed in potential landslide areas, which is why the stability and structural integrity of their foundations is essential to guarantee a reliable and safe operation.

ACI Monitoring was commissioned with the planning, installation, documentation and epoch-wise monitoring of several DFOS lines inside the foundation slabs with a total cable length of more than 1.2 km.

Embankment Monitoring (Löcherwald – Arlberg Line)

The Löcherwald area (Wald am Arlberg-Dalaas, Austria) of the Arlberg railway line operated by Austrian Federal Railways (OEBB) has been completely renovated commencing from 2022. As part of the renewal works, two designated areas with a total length of 320 m of the track bed embankments were equipped with several layers of fiber optic sensing cables to monitor potential structrual anomalies.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the design, documentation and installation of the fiber optic sensing system, covering more than 1.3 km of sensing length.

Tunnel Rudersdorf (S07 Fürstenfelder Schnellstraße)

The newly constructed S07 Fürstenfeld expressway runs from the Riegersdorf junction (A2) via Fürstenfeld to the Hungarian state border at Heiligenkreuz. The total length is 28.4 km and will cost approx. 857 million euros.

ACI Monitoring was commissioned with the planning, installation, documentation and monitoring of 10 DFOS measurement cross-sections in the inner lining of the Rudersdorf tunnel. In advance, our founding team memebers were also involved in the planning and installation of 13 measurement cross-sections and a longitudinal monitoring line of 200 m in the outer lining. All fiber optic sensing layers were continuously recorded, automatically evaluated over a period of two years and made available to the geotechnical engineers on-site.

Plabutsch Tunnel (A9 Pyhrn motorway)

The Plabutschtunnel with a total length of approximately 10 km on the western outskirts of Graz is the second longest highway tunnel in Austria. Its availibility withut resrtistions is essential to relief the city traffic and to avoid congestions.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned to monitor a fiber optic sensing network, which was installed under fire protection panels to analyze the structural integrity of the tunnel ceiling. ACI Monitoring’s founding team members were also directly involved in the planning, installation and documentation of the DFOS system.

Koralm Railway (Construction Lot 3.1)

The Koralmbahn, a railway line currently under construction in Austria, connects the cities of Klagenfurt and Graz, spanning approximately 127 kilometers. It is a crucial transportation link, providing efficient rail connections between two major cities.

The railroad tunnel was built using the open construction method in the area of Graz Airport. In the course of the construction, ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the planning, installation, documentation and monitoring of several DFOS sensing layers. Observations were recorded continuously during and after concreting to analyze hydration effects at an early concrete stage. Subsequently, the measurements are being performed on an epoch-by-epoch basis to monitor long-term effects of the constructed lining.

Tunnel Langer Berg (Koralm Railway)

The Koralmbahn is a high-speed railway line in Austria, connecting the cities of Graz and Klagenfurt. With a total length of approximately 130 kilometers, it significantly reduces travel time between these two major cities, providing an essential transportation link in the region.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with epoch-wise measurements of five DFOS cross-sections of the inner lining in an anhydrite area of the Langer Berg tunnel. Our founding team members were also directly involved in the planning, installation and documentation of the monitoring system.

Tunnel Integrity Monitoring System (TIMS)

The Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) is a significant wastewater management project in Singapore, designed to enhance the country’s sewage infrastructure. It involves the construction of a vast network of deep tunnels and sewerage facilities to efficiently collect and transport wastewater for treatment, reducing pollution and enhancing environmental sustainability in the city-state.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned with the planning and consulting of the Tunnel Integrity Monitoring System (TIMS) as part of the DTSS project. In total, more than 150 km of distributed fiber optic sensing cable are beeing installed by the construction companies on-site.

Dam Limberg (Verbund)

The Limberg III dam is an essential part of the pumped storage power plant system in Kaprun (Pinzgau, Austria). Its height is being increased to allow more precipitation to be stored and more electricity to be generated in future, which finally secures energy requirements.

ACI Monitoring has been commissioned to supply several fiber optic sensing cable layers, perfectly adjusted to project requirements, and performed several fiber optic test measurements using different DFOS principles. Numerous DFOS cable layers in horizontal as well as longitudinal direction will be integrated into the existing dam structure to monitoring the behavior during further construction.

Bored Pile Load Test (Přerov)

ACI was commissioned to conduct DFOS measurements along one bored pile (diameter about 1m) with a length of 20 m during load testing, corresponding data evaluation and enhanced analysis of the monitoring results.
